Avery Sparks and Declan McCormick have been best friends since college. At some point, Avery was in relationship with Declan’s best friend, Sam. When they split up and Sam demands that Declan take a side, he chooses Avery. They become best friends and eventually roommates.

Avery has a strong fear of driving in the rain because her parents were killed in a car accident, and she enlists Declan to drive her to an event. He screws up royally and she ends up going by herself and being in a serious accident. Her leg and arm are broken and she has to go through surgery and her recovery is going to take time. Ridden with guilt, Declan clears his schedule, sets up everything to work from home and decides that he will take care of Avery.

Feelings get muddled and they are forced into more proximity than they do by living in the same apartment as Declan has to do everything for Avery. And I mean everything

I really liked the story and I liked Declan and Avery together. However, the book for some reason needed more… romance! It focuses too much on how guilty Declan feels and how Avery feels bad that she lost her independency. I wish we had more development in the romantic relationship. Maybe it’s me, because this is one of my favorite tropes and I felt a little disappointed – especially since this is Helena Hunting and she writes really well and I always love her books.

Still a good book, but one that could have been great.

Possible triggers: death of parents in car accident (prior to story), car accident

Narration: Stella Bloom does a charming Avery and Jason Clarke is an amazing narrator, so no complaints there.
