Pucked #2

Author: Helena Hunting

Kindle Unlimited and Audible

Narrator: Joe Arden

Miller “Buck” Butterson is the quintessential stereotypical hockey player: an ace on the ice and a hardcore player when it comes to the puck bunnies. That is until he meets Sunshine “Sunny” Waters, his captain’s little sister. He’s been pretty much pissed off at his captain for dating his own sister, so why not return the favor and date Sunny, right? Well, he wasn’t expecting Sunny. She’s definitely not a bunny. And he’s really happy to have found her – someone he wasn’t even aware he was looking for.

We met Buck in Pucked and he comes out pretty much as a dumb jock in that book. He makes stupid choices, says really idiotic things, you know, the whole package. I must confess that I wasn’t a fan. Kudos for Helena Hunting for making us see Buck in a completely different way. He’s trying really hard to turn things around, but the press is used to portraying him as a party animal and no matter how hard he tries to convince Sunny of his new ways, pics keep popping up that can totally be misinterpreted. It doesn’t help matters that Alex, Sunny’s brother, and Lily, her best friend, are totally campaigning against them getting together. Will the redeemed playboy finally get the girl who stole his heart?I really liked the story and how the romance develops. I was also pleasantly surprised that the book is totally told through Miller’s point of view. We also get a good amount of Violet and Alex, which is a delight for Pucked fans.

The reason why I didn’t give this the full five stars is that I think there was a missed opportunity to have great representation of people with learning disabilities. We saw Miller’s struggles with dyslexia, but I really wished we saw him overcoming them more, using his platform to raise awareness and show everyone he was in no way “a dumb guy”. Since he was so intent on raising money for good causes, that would have been a good one.  I also realize that I am not being fair to the author, as I am reading this book through the lens of 2021 while this book was written in 2016. There is, though, an author’s note added in 2019 that I suggest you don’t skip.

All in all, it was a great addition to the Pucked series. And I am loving the series!

Narration: solo narration by the amazing Joe Arden. Enough said.
