Shaking Up #1

Audiobook, Audible Kindle Edition, Kindle Unlimited

Author: Helena Hunting

Narrators: Rose Dioro and Jacob Morgan

Ruby Scott is in a pickle: her dreams of becoming an employed actress are endangered because her rich father doesn’t want to pay her expenses while “she plays pretend”. She just found out that her  rent hasn’t been paid in three months and his ditzy secretary forgot to tell her she had been cut off. All her hopes lie on her audition the next day.

At one of her best friend’s parties, she is mistakenly kissed by a very handsome and skilled-in- the-arts-of-kissing man, who immediately coughs on her face. She leaves the party with parting gift: a bug that will make her turn into Linda Blair during the pea soup scene in The Exorcist right in the middle of her audition.

Now jobless and homeless, Ruby has to accept a job as a pet sitter for one her best friend’s fiancé’s cousins… who is none other than Bancroft Mills, also known as “the awesome, yet virulent, kisser”. He feels really bad when he finds out that she lost her audition because he gave her his awful virus and is more than happy to give her a job. He’s going to be overseas for five weeks and really needs a sitter, so it’s all perfect timing.

They soon find out that they have a lot in common, including her love for his exotic pets,  a tarantula and a ferret. Lots of video calls later and they are flirting like crazy and Bancroft is counting the days when he goes back home to  “his girls”.

I loooooved this book! It has the quintessential Helena Hunting meet cute and the hilarious parts we all learned to love. There are obviously the miscommunication situations, especially in a story where most of the getting to know each other was done via video call. I loved the story, I loved the pets, I loved the side characters! Great kick off for a new series!

Narration: Jacob Morgan (DUH), though he doesn’t narrate too many chapters. Rose Dioro’s voice is spot on as Ruby. She’s quickly become a favorite.
