Cane Brothers #1

Audible audiobook

Author: Meghan Quinn

Narrators: Aaron Shedlock and Ava Erickson

Huxley Cane is all business and no heart, apparently, and that makes him “unrelatable” to the new guy he wants to close a major deal with. So, God knows why, he blurts out that he’s engaged and that his fiancée is expecting. Wait, what?

Lottie Gardner has just been fired by her “best friend” when she thought she was finally going to get promoted as promised. Her solution? To roam the streets of the fancy neighborhood near where she lives looking for a “rich husband”. A PG version of “Pretty Woman” so to speak. And whaddya know?! She bumps into Huxley and they seem to think they are the answer to each other’s problems.

As screwball-y and whacky as beginnings go, this one is a doozy, but I still thought I was going to enjoy it. Meghan Quinn wrote one of my favorite series ever (Port Snow) and it seems she usually delivers, but this was a miss for me. The book is over 400 pages and still manages to be… uneventful. I couldn’t find a single reason why Lottie is so antagonistic when it comes to Huxley and then BOOM, things turn instalust-y. I’m fine with that, but it became instalove-y and I was just not invested in these characters anymore. I just wanted things to move along and the story to go somewhere.

I know there are supposedly funny scenes it’s too over the top for me. Wacky and zany can be fun, but I was just… bored. So many tropes I love and I still couldn’t get roped into the story as I hoped I would be.

I still might listen to the next book because I am curious about Huxley’s brother and Lottie’s sister.

I’m sure MQ’s fans enjoy this one from the reviews I see around but sadly this one didn’t hit the spot for me.

Narration: Here’s one great example of what I say in regards to good narration doing wonders for a book. Aaron Shedlock is perfect as the cocky, arrogant Huxley and Ava Erickson is just amazing as always as the quirky Lottie. LISTENING is what made me finish this one.
