Set in the magical high seas of the Threshold, Hunt on Dark Waters is book 1 in the Crimson Sails series. It follows Evelyn, a thieving impulsive witch, who, after stealing family heirlooms from her very dangerous (sort of) girlfriend Lizzie, is catapulted into the Threshold through a magical portal. She’s fished out of the water by the telekinetic powers of the captain of the Crimson Hag. She has a choice: join the crew or walk the plank.

Bowen and his pirate crew have made a vow to patrol the Threshold, keeping the magical seas between realms safe. He’s unexpectedly attracted to the witch, who seems to question everything he believes in. Pretty soon she has him questioning everything too…

I’ll start by saying that, though it doesn’t end in a cliffhanger, this is pretty much a “book 1” – worlds are built, story arcs are put in place and despite a very satisfactory “happy for now” ending, you will feel the need to go ahead in the series as a lot is still left open.

Bowen is the “touch her and die” hero and bound by honor to things that are not what they seem. Evelyn is a sassy witch and you know she’s going to be trouble. And fun.

If you like pirates, witches, vampires, high seas adventures, telekinetic powers used in the bedroom, you’re definitely going to love this one. Be prepared to commit to a series, though. I can’t wait to see what happens next and what’s in store for Lizzie!

Side note: Though I appreciate Kate Robert’s attempt to use proper pronouns, she decided to use a few (Ne, Ze and nim, nir, zir etc) for some characters and they confused me a little. At first, I thought they were typos and not what they actually meant. I understand the reasoning behind them, though.
