Misery Lark, the daughter of a powerful Vampyre councilman, has been a pawn in his political schemes all her life. Sent away to live as “The Collateral” amongst the Humans, she has been living incognita as one of them with her adopted sister. She has basically no ties with her own kind. Suddenly, everything changes: her sister disappears without a trace and she’s summoned back to “The Nest”. Once more she’s to be the sacrificial lamb in her father schemes. She’s to marry Lowe Moreland, Alpha of the Southern Weres, in a peacemaking  marriage of convenience. Soon, she sees herself living in Were territory, married to a man who can’t stand the smell of her, watched 24/7. All that while dodging several assassination attempts. Not fun.

When Lowe agreed to this sham of a marriage he wasn’t expecting HER. She’s not like any other Vampyre and soon he realizes that his “wife” is not an enemy. They can actually work together. As the days pass, political alliances take a backseat to the powerful feelings they develop for each other.

Weres mate for life… whatever happens when they’re tied to a Vampyre?

Ali Hazelwood’s first foray into paranormal romance and it’s a home run! The perfect introductory book for someone who’s not a paranormal fan. It’s hard to have a fresh take on established lores like vampires and werewolves but she does a great job in creating an interesting world where all those creatures are out in the open and they’re not as powerful and mighty as they would like to  be.

Pardon the pun, but you can smell the fated mates situation a mile away and you keep wanting Misery to get a clue of what’s really going on with Lowe. You understand, however, why she’s clueless to all things vampyre and were as she was basically cast away as a kid and never belonged anywhere. Lowe is the quintessential “Alpha” with a soft side and you keep rooting for them to find a way to make it work.

I had a lot of fun with this one and I hope the epilogue gave us a hint that we might hear more from this world in the future!
