We’re back in the Threshold and Lizzie, the ice queen, bloodline vampire is still on the ship, trying to find a way to the Crimson Hag so she can retrieve her family heirlooms. When they stop to rescue a selkie, she thinks she may strike a partnership with the beautiful shifter. She needs a guide and Maeve, the selkie, needs help in getting her stolen pelt back. Selkies are never whole without them as they lose the ability to shift. It’s the most unusual partnership, but soon enough the cold-blooded killer’s heart is a little warmer by being around Maeve. And Maeve can’t keep her eyes off Lizzie. She knows Lizzie will take off through the portal as soon as she gets her jewels back, so pursuing anything with her will end up in heartbreak… but the allure is enormous for both of them. Could Lizzie ever think of staying?
I love a good fantasy romance and I was super excited to see what would happen to Lizzie after the events of book 1. Though the story picks up immediately after the events of the previous book, the first third of the story was too heavy in describing the fantasy elements and the romance was the slowest of burns. I loved how the apparently docile Maeve melted the ice queen’s heart. It’s heartbreaking to see how Maeve is guarded after the betrayal she suffered and it’s lovely to see how Lizzie steps in in a “touch her and die”/”who did this to you?” romance with her orgasmic bites. The action is fun, there is a happy for now, but this is definitely an episode in the saga of the rebellion, so that side of the story is pretty much unresolved. All in all it was a fun read.
