Ian Chase is finally back home in Boston from Calgary, where he has lived  for the past 6 years. He went to live there after a PR nightmare after his divorce. Now, he thinks he’s close to retiring and he wants to play his last hockey seasons in the team his family owns. However, he apparently needs an image makeover because the media still sees him as a cheater.

Delilah Baker is Ian’s best friend sister. They’ve known each other forever, and when her baking cable tv show has a drop in the ratings, her publicist thinks a collaboration with her hockey player brother’s team might be excellent publicity. When they send Ian as the player to participate in the show, Delilah sees herself in a pickle: Ian is the star of her teenage dreams, the one she always wanted – still does. Having him on the show may be a little painful, but there is no way she won’t help him.

I am going to be very honest here – I was expecting something different from this one. Maybe because it’s marketed as a fake dating, sports romance and there is very little of what we came to love in the fake dating trope and it’s a hockey romance with very little hockey per se. I also figured out pretty early on what “secret” Ian was keeping so it was just a matter of waiting for it to be revealed.

It’s delightfully spicy. I loved the banter between Cupcake and Sweet Girl. The romance is lovely between them. Delilah’s brother is fun, but, I don’t know, there was something missing to make it an all-around 5 star listen.

Narration here is top notch, though. Samantha Summers (my first time listening to her) and Zachary Webber give wonderful performances as the girl who finally gets the boy of her dreams and the boy who sacrificed so much of his life for others and finally gets to have something special for himself.

Content notes: toxic relationship with a parent, mentions parents death and living temporarily in an orphanage
