Thank you, @mustloveaudio for the ALC!
Ellie heads to Sparrow Falls from NYC after the downfall of her father’s empire and the end of her engagement. That’s where her brother moved to and found happiness. She rents a house next to the police chief (sheriff!!! IYKYK), a single dad who shares custody of the adorable Keely, with whom she formed a ‘besties’ bond in previous visits.
Trace is guarded. His priority is his six year old he adores. But his past (like with all the Colsons) is dark and it’s coming back to haunt him. The last thing the grumpy, ‘never smiles’ Trace needs is to fall for his best friend’s sister who’s clearly hiding secrets of her own. But amidst inabilities to braid hair and to defrost a pizza in the oven they find a common ground, a pull that proves to be irresistible. But we all know that life in Sparrow Falls is never quiet…
Narrated dual style by Desireee Ketchum and Jason Clarke, this one is a gem. I’m in awe of how they transition between all the characters flawlessly. Desiree’s warm, expressive and alluring voice is perfect to match Ellie, a woman finally finding herself. Jason is phenomenal here too, especially as he does the majority of the scenes where he has to voice a six-year-old girl and it’s absolutely adorable! 10 out of 10 no notes!
As in all Catherine’s books, “murdery” things happen and I am happy to say that was OMGing with the reveal of the culprit. I wasn’t falling for the red herrings but this one really surprised me and that is VERY rare! Well done, Ms. Cowles!
I can’t wait to go back to Sparrow Falls!
Content notes: mentions of childhood trauma, loss of parent, parental abuse, domestic abuse, violence, use of guns, kidnapping, murder
