Frienship #3

Author: Kate Canterbary

Thanks, @katecanterbary for the advanced copy.

I said the other day that one of the greatest joys for a reader is picking up a book by an author who has mastered their craft. Kate is one of those authors. And in In A Second she again proved me right.

The third in the Friendship series, this a story of teenage sweethearts, separated by ill meaning parents with a horrible agenda (disguised as best intentions), who reunite after 15 years. They meet again at a high school reunion that apparently neither one wanted to attend and end up in a cockamamie fake engagement scheme and road trip from hell that forces them to face everything that happened, figure out neither one was at fault and finally try to find a way to each other because, well, ‘it’s always been you’.

Jude is now a single dad who’s living through a bizarre custody battle. Audrey is a former ballerina, now a first grade teacher – who finally found her footing and her agency. I was fascinated by them, little Percy and, most of all, by how Kate managed to bring together.

I am always thrilled to see beloved characters show up like they always do. I won’t tell you who – and there are many – but my favorite grump of all time and my favorite fictional child are there and I was kicking my feet!

I know I might sound biased and I would probably side eye a book with this blurb by any other author, but Kate NEVER disappoints.

11 out of 10 – no notes!

Well, one note: Jamie’s book, please!

(The use of excessive dashes here is to make a point! LOL)

Rep: Percy has selective mutism due to PTSD and uses ASL. Audrey has food intolerances and IBS.

Content notes: toxic family dynamics, family member with cancer (remission). death of a character in car accident (past), custody issues, mentions of pregnancy (ectopic) resulting in hysterectomy, dementia diagnosis, psychologically abusive relationship (past)
