Cooper and Declan are best friends. Two gay kids with big dreams of rock concerts and the NHL. One ‘7 minutes in heaven’ game and it kickstarts a ‘let’s explore’ situationship that neither one wants to address fully. As they grow older, their dreams start to become a reality. Declan is playing college hockey and Cooper is starting to get some traction in the music scene. They’ll live their dreams together.
Then tragedy strikes and, instead of heading towards their goals together, they are now moving in opposite directions: a career ending injury sends Declan back home. A viral video shoots Cooper to stardom. And Life happens…
OMG, I loved this angsty, messy, emotional audiobook! Narrated beautifully in dual style by Tim Paige and Jason Clarke, who take you across the years through this ‘idiots to lovers’ , ‘it’s always been you’ second chance romance. Tim’s warm, kinda peppy voice is perfect for the golden retrieve Cooper. Jason is perfection too as the broody, lovesick Declan. Both shine in their character transitions and Jason gets to voice a little girl and it’s downright adorable!
One of the things I loved most about this book is that the boys’ sexuality is never a problem. Unrealistic? Maybe. But that is the world that I hope to one day live in.
What you get: best friends falling in love, an ‘everyone can see it but them’ situationship, first times, reshaping your life when the dream is no longer possible, a bodyguard that is more a guardian angel, wonderful parents, a spitfire little sister and an HEA that will hit you in the feels.
This was my first Vari Scott but definitely won’t be my last.
Representation: queer romance/ MM
Content notes (including but not limited to): career ending injury, panic attacks (on page). Power imbalance and manager manipulation.
