Skye runs her late grandmother’s inn in a quaint Scottish town. She went back there when she left her boyfriend/bandmate more than a decade ago because she didn’t trust their manager. She left, broken-hearted, found a new life, quit music, got married and divorced and became an inn keeper. She’s happy to see that some ‘John Smith’ booked a month-long stay at the inn as they really need the guests. Too bad when ‘John’ arrives, he’s none other than Noah, her rockstar ex who became a household name with a song named after her, based on their love story. There’s too much hurt, but she finds out that he’s now also hurt. And that manager? He just proved her right.
He has nowhere to go. She gives him a week. The paps find out where he is and they get stuck together while to whole town rallies to protect one of their own.
I was impressed that, for a novella, I was pretty much invested in these character and had enough to feel who they were and where they were coming from. The Book Bitches – a band of old ladies up to no good – are a hoot and there is a tiny paranormal, whimsical element with appearances by Skye’s grandmother’s ghost and a mistletoe that manifests out of thin airl.
There audiobook is narrated by Amy Landon (we know her as someone else too, if you recognize her voice) and Will Watt, both favorites, Amy gives Skye a slight, melodious accent that’s lovely. Will is swoony as always as Noah. They are all pretty great as all the other characters too.
It’s a short, sweet, a bit spicy Christmas novella that will put you in the holiday spirit.
