Three months ago, Cait Weatherby’s life took a sharp turn: she found out who her birth other was, discovered she had two half sisters and became part owner of a house and a dilapidated bistro in Silver Island. Nothing had prepared her for the onslaught of feelings in her heart. You see, Cait has been putting strong walls around herself to protect her soul and her heart. Adopted as an infant, she lost the only mother she ever knew – a loving and caring mother – and was left in the hands of a cruel and abusive father. At sixteen, she took the courage to flee and never looked back.

When she gets contacted by a friend of her late biological mother, she takes off to Silver Island to learn more about her past. There, she finds a kinship to her newfound sisters and a part-time job helping put the bistro back together. She’s an accomplished tattoo artist and body piercer at The Cape and she’s been trying to go back and forth between her two different lives. The Cape has been her safe for a long time, working at the tattoo shop with Tank Wicked and the subtle protection of the Dark Knights.

There is one huge complication in Cait’s life: it came in the form of Brant Remington, a blue-eyed, baseball cap wearing boat builder who’s just sunshine impersonated. In the words of his family and friends, he’s “the good one”. And he’s been relentlessly hitting on Cait from day one!

Will he be able, with the help an adorable little dog, to peel away the layers of protection and tear down the wall built around Cait’s heart?

We met Cait in book 1 and I immediately had a soft spot for her. We could tell she had been deeply hurt and being skittish would be expected. It was so good to see her start to trust again – beginning with her newfound sisters. The friendship that develops between them is beautiful. It’s impossible not to notice how starved for love she is and how terrified she is of loving back.

Brant is the perfect sunshine/cinnamon hero. And when he saves Cait from almost drowning while trying to save a little dog, he comes up with the sweetest ruse: co-parenting the little pooch! This way he and Cait can spend more time together. When he shows up with little Scrappy on a sling, we all swooned – Cait included!

This book is quintessential Melissa – a girl with a broken spirit being healed by the power of Love. It is a book about a person who survived abuse and Melissa does it with absolute grace.

Brant is so book-boyfriend material! The way he understood and respected Cait’s feelings is just swoony!

It’s a slow but steady ride to Cait and Brant – filled with a cute dog, Sharpies bought in bulk, and a lot of love, understanding and healing.

Bonus: if you are a Melissa reader, you already know that (even though this is a book you can totally pick up and read without having read anything previously) she makes you feel that we are part of this world, and we get to catch up with our friends: we get to see Aiden and Abby, Grant and Jules, and Tank and Leah.

As always, a MUST read.

Possible triggers: emotional and physical abuse by a parent, loss of a parent (previous to story), mentions of alcoholism
