The Mercy Series #3
KU e-book, Audible Audiobook
Author: Debra Anastasia
Narrators: Rose Dioro, Zachary Webber and Benjamin Charles.
Lock is being initiated into The Cokes, a gang, and he’s thrown through a glass window. Then, on the floor, he meets the most beautiful girl in the world: Ember. He doesn’t know yet, but she’s the sister of the infamous, legendary Mercy, an assassin feared by everyone in the underworld. Lock didn’t want the gang life. His dad was wrongly accused of murder and he, at only 19, can’t find another way to provide for his mom and his beloved sister, who has special needs. Ember knows that her brother is into “shady business” but she’s adamant she has to go to college and have a “normal life”.
These two meet, there’s an instant connection, and a sweet romance blossoms. But their lives come with hidden dangers, and when Amber is taken by a man bent on revenge towards Mercy, Lock finds himself guarding her for her captor. What her kidnapper doesn’t know is that he will definitely take a bullet on the job… but for HER.
Third and final installment in The Mercy Series, this follows Nix’s sister. In a act of rebellion (she doesn’t feel like “family” in the tight knit group around her brother), she decides she needs to attend college on her own. Mercy is rightfully concerned but he thinks the only danger to her is her “puppy love” for Lock. That’s when you get a “Bond villain” who kidnaps Ember so that he can take revenge on Mercy, marry her to his son and therefore grow an empire and all those over the top super villain things. It’s fun and exciting, though a “little too much” at times, like a good Bond movie. It’s darker than the previous ones, but still not horribly disturbing – albeit very violent.
The romance is sweet and steamy, but very new adult-y, which is expected – they’re 19! There is a sweet epilogue set one year later tying up all the stories. I just wanted a little more about both dads, Ember’s and Lock’s. Great fun and a real page-turner!
(PS: My heart still belongs to the “slightly” unhinged Nix. Just sayin’)
Narration: Rose Dioro kicking ass again, Zachary Webber (insert all the gushy adjectives you know I have for him here) and Benjamin Charles in a small role. Great audiobook!
Possible triggers: kidnapping, several murders on page, harassment, several acts of violence
