The Walsh Family #6

KU ebook, Audible audiobook

Author: Kate Canterbary

Narrators: Christian Fox and Lucy Rivers

When Erin Walsh agrees to go back home for her bother Matt’s wedding, she knows it won’t be easy. Nine years ago she packed up her things for college in Hawaiii and from there she went all over the world as a respected volcanologist. She was fleeing a past of abuse, self-harm and, most of all, she wanted to stay away from her big sister, Shannon and they haven’t spoken ever since.

She’s assigned a “baby-sitter” at the wedding, the bride’s brother, but pretty soon she sees herself spending time with Dr. Nick Acevedo, the groom’s best friend. There is an instant mutual attraction and when Erin starts to feel overwhelmed she asks Nick to get her out of there and they end spending the night around town. She dares him to steal a boat, but he finds a boat captain willing to take them on his lobster fishing run. It turns out the captain is an ordained minister… and yeah, you guessed it, they get hitched on another dare!

Their relationship as a married (in secret) couple develops through a series of emails and texts and the long distance (continents apart) can take its toll. Will Nick be able to get Erin to finally come home?

I had been really curious about Erin. We know from previous books that she’s estranged from her family but only learn why now. It’s a Walsh book, but this one is heavily centered on Erin and Nick. The story is cleverly told through their written exchanges, a modern day epistolary romance. I confess Erin frustrated me a little at times but I understood her. Nick is grade A book boyfriend material! Swoony! Great book!

Narration: Christian Fox bringing all that southern charm to Texan Nick. Le swoon. Lucy Rivers amazing again.

Rep and possible triggers: Nick is of Mexican descent.  past emotional and sexual abuse by a parent; FMC spent time in a psychiatric facility; history of self-harm (cutting); past attempted suicide (slashed wrists); MMC is a pediatric neurosurgeon and mentions medical situations and loss of patients
