The Devils #3

Audible audiobook

Author: Elizabeth O’Roarke

Narrator: Samantha Brentmoor

Gemma is a ruthless lawyer. She has to be. After all, she is a female guppy in a shark tank. Plus she has to deal with Ben Tate (“stealer of clients, evicted of homeless women, nemesis”), her direct competition for the partnership spot she has been putting all her work into for the past six years. She’s successfully avoided him – sorta, because they exchange little jabs all the time – until the head honchos at the firm throw them together in a case that could change their careers. It means evenings and weekends together and she’s starting to see that the devil is not as bad as she thought. One thing leads to another and, WTH, he is making her beg…

I had a lot of fun with this one. An enemies to lovers in the workplace where we soon start to figure out (way before Gemma does) that Ben has never been her enemy and he’s been pining for her even before he joined the firm.

I loved how feisty Gemma is and adamant she is in defending her rightful place in the firm and in life.

Ben is absolutely Hallmark movie hero material (though there is a moment there where you do OH NO YOU DIDN’T!!!!! but he redeems himself in a spectacular way). Even though I adored Ben, I was a bit disappointed that, in the end, HE was the knight in shining armor in the story. I truly wanted for Gemma to kick those old fogey’s asses herself.

Narration: OMG, I have no words to say how good Samantha Brentmoor is. This is a solo narration (with a teeny weeny blink and you miss short appearance by Jason Clarke) and she nails it! Perfect!

Possible triggers: aftermath of divorce, mention of death or parent, misogyny in the workplace, sexual harassment, toxic relationships (with former spouse and with child), cheating (secondary characters), betrayal and deception
