Goldie Collins is leaving for London soon. It’s her dream job after a craptastic breakup (her boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend and teammate ) and she’s sorting everything to leave. What she wasn’t expecting was Fletcher Huxley, a transplant from the UK who’s been brought to her brother’s rugby team to see if he can bring some attention to the sport stateside (while reviving his career).
He wears the mustache from hell and he irritates her overbearing brother, so she should just stay away. But, actually, irritating her brother is a bonus in her book… So, setting up a revenge date with Fletcher might be mutually beneficial. She brings publicity to the team by “dating” him and one-ups her ex-boyfriend while giving her brother a coronary so to speak.
Well, well, well, the man carries his dog in a baby slip, is kind to little kids and old ladies and goes “touch her and die” when they meet her ex. She might be a tad wrong about him after all…
Rom coms are a hard genre to write because there is a fine line where funny becomes silly and slapstick-y and you lose me. Pippa never crosses that line here.
I realize some people might find Fletcher hard to love, but I was endeared by him from the moment he literally fell on Goldie. Yes, he behaves like an oaf sometimes, but Goldie is the perfect heroine to peel those layers and figure out who he really is. The banter is top notch and they are fire together. Plus, this is my kinda funny.
I listened to the audiobook and Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke elevated the fun factor even more in this one. Samantha is perfection as the feisty but a little broken Goldie and growly and grumpy Jason is always a delight (especially when the grumpy gets involuntarily mushy! ). What a fun experience!
