The Undone #1

Libby Audiobook and Kindle E-book

Author: Peyton Corinne

Narrators: Kelsey Navarro-Foster and Max Meyers

Rhys Koteskiy should be back on the ice. He’s the captain of the hockey team, he’s NHL legacy, but the brutal hit he took during the Frozen Four has left him with night terrors and panic attacks.

It’s one of those panic attacks that Sadie Brown witnesses. She shouldn’t get involved. Her life is already a mess with her disappearing acts to raise her brothers and deal with her alcoholic father. But for some reason, she manages to calm down the giant hyperventilating on the rink.

He feels like he’s an empty shell. She feels like she’s bursting at the seams with bottled up feelings. One shared pair of earphones will change their lives forever.

I was kind of afraid of listening a super-hyped book because there’s always a chance of your expectations being too high. I can’t believe this a debut novel! The depth of characters is incredible. The mental health representation is spot on. Rhys is complex in his current  inability to deal with the aftermath of a life threatening injury and all the expectations put on his shoulders. Sadie is the quintessential black cat. She hisses at everyone, but you would too if you were in her shoes. It’s moving to see them become each other’s person, each other’s haven, in healthy way. I won’t even mention how hard you fall for the Koteskiys!

The audiobook is narrated dual style by Kelsey Navarro Foster and Max Meyers. Kelsey embodies the tired, overwhelmed, skittish yet determined and fierce Sadie and makes you want to be her friend and protect her, prickly demeanor and all. This is my first time listening to Max Meyers and I was hooked. Rhys is already Stella book boyfriend material and Max makes him absolutely swoony. Worth the hype!

Content notes: PTSD from a sports injury, child abandonment, abusive coach/athlete dynamics,  panic attacks on page, night terrors, financial insecurity, child custody issues
