Author: Ali Hazelwood

To keep with the numerous references in the book, Elsie and Jack would be Team Jacob X Team Edward in life. She’s a theoretical physicist, he’s an experimentalist. He’s part of the board that will interview her for her dream job. He’s also the brother of the guy she’s fake dating for reasons. And to make things even worse, he’s the one person she hated with a passion for years – the man who wrote the article that made a mockery of her mentor and all theoretical physicists, starting a still ongoing feud. Yes, she despises him. Now he seems to dislike her too, seeing that he’s met her as his brother’s “librarian” girlfriend and now think she’s a liar and possibly a gold digger. Oh the mess…

So, when things finally get explained, Elsie has to deal with extreme “people pleasing” tendencies, her future in the  academic world… and that pesky feeling for her enemy. Feelings that she’s never felt for anyone before…

As usual in Ali’s books, we’re back in academia and I loved those emails from students that rang too true for me! lol Gone are the days of “the dog ate my homework”!

It’s entirely told through Elsie’s POV, and even so you can tell that Jack has been plagued by the fact that he’s been pining for his brother’s “girlfriend”. I loved how Jack “sees” Elsie and does everything for her to be herself. Something she has a really hard time doing.

Elsie is diabetic with no health insurance and it shines a light on the hardships of living with a chronic disease in the American health system: does she buy food or insulin?

If you like a pining hero, women in STEM and academic shenanigans, you will love this one. I did.

Rep and possible triggers: FMC has diabetes. ACE/ARO rep. Misogyny in the workplace, financial instability, manipulative  relationship
