5 years ago, Sigmund lost the love of his life. Now, her parents come to him with a request: his late wife had had her eggs frozen before undergoing treatment and now they want to use those eggs and fulfill their daughter’s last wish to have a child, and she wanted the father to be him. They already have a surrogate, a friend of the family, who’s willing to carry the baby that they will happily raise. All he needs is to say yes.

At first, he’s shocked then intrigued. He wants to meet this woman and when he does, he’s not exactly thrilled… for reasons. He finally agrees with the plan with the condition that Abby should stay in England for the pregnancy and childbirth. He wasn’t planning on raising the baby but he wants to be present for that. He doesn’t think he can raise a child without Britney.

Abby wasn’t expecting a warm welcome, but she wasn’t expecting Sig to be so standoffish, grumpy and dead set on finding fault in everything about her. Plus, he’s gorgeous and that threw her off…They both think they’ll be able to keep their hearts out of the equation, but baby or not, they’re smitten… Baby only complicates things.

If you read The Aristocrat, you already met Sig and you expect some sort of lothario. On the contrary, after Britney, he’s sort of “reformed”. Sort of.  And though I usually don’t like the “looming dead wife” on a story, Britney’s presence here is almost kind of like a benign angel’s. It’s unexpectedly low angst for a book dealing with such complicated feelings and I was there for all of them. Thankfully, no third act nonsense either! Yes, it’s a standalone but we catch up with Leo and Felicity.

Narration is plus gold! Desiree Ketchum is lovely as the feisty Abby, who’s going through so many emotions! Jacob Morgan with a British accent is a treat on its own.

A lovely story of finding a second chance at happiness – in the most unexpected way.

Possible triggers: grief, surrogacy, mentions of cancer diagnosis and treatment, hospitalization, medical urgencies.
