When Charlie Fisher interviews Elodie Peach for a substitute position teaching 19th century History to teenagers, he’s impressed with her resume. However, he’s way more obsessed with her swan-like neck. And her green eyes. But her neck… ah her neck. Yeah, not appropriate and she’s hired and as the months go by, he does his best to keep her at bay by treating her with way more than a stiff upper lip. Elodie finds Charlie annoyingly attractive, but if he can’t even be a tiny bit friendly to her at work, she’ll just ignore him.
When he proposed to her that she be Anne Boleyn to his Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace, she’s baffled. But that’s her favorite period in History and she needs the extra money, so she says yes. “King” Charlie is a surprise! He’s charming, witty and she can’t believe the swagger! And we all know how obsessed Henry was with Anne Boleyn…
Oh be still my History-loving heart! This one was sweet, spicy and emotional. I love broody, stuffy Charlie, who hides more than what is underneath the codpiece. Elodie is charming, loyal. a loving sister and aunt and (my favorite part) an engaging teacher. She’s passionate and she won’t take crap from His Royal Stuffiness! Their romance is spicy, but cute and swoony and no heads rolled ( even though you may want to, at least, shake Charlie a bit for reasons). What a lovely story.
Perfectly cast with Zara Hampton-Brown and Shane East performing in duet, this is a treat for audiobook lovers. Zara is lovely with her soft-spoken voice that conveys Elodie’s personality wonderfully. Shane is kind of adorable as the smitten and utterly charming grump and he makes you root for Charlie and Elodie hard.
History buffs, teachers, loving families, palace shenanigans, Anne Boleyn revisionist History and lots steamy spice. You can’t go wrong with all that.
