City Lights III New York

Audiobook, Storytel

Author: Emma Scott

Narrators: Caitlin Kelly and Aaron Shedlock

Charlotte Conroy went to NYC to attend Juilliard. As a violin virtuoso, she’s on her on her way to brilliant career when tragedy hits and her brother is killed in an accident. Devastated, she flees to Montana for the services. When she comes back, she finds out that her boyfriend not only gave away her seat at the string quartet but also her girlfriend status. Broken by her grief and her break up, she can’t find the music in her…

One year later, Charlotte is working two jobs to make ends meet. On a specific crappy day at the bistro she works at, she is sent out on a delivery to a regular customer: a certain Mr Lake, who goes through assistants like candy. The last one quit and she has to go deliver his breakfast. She never even get to meet him but still she gets the “special treatment”. What a prick!

To her surprise, a couple of days later, an older, French gentleman comes to her with a proposal: he wants her to be the grumpy ass’ new assistant. The salary is great, it comes with benefits, but she has to google Noah Lake before she accepts. She finds out that Noah is a 25-year-old extreme sports enthusiast. A reporter and photographer, he had a near fatal accident cliff-diving that has left him blind. Charlotte feels for the poor guy and decides to take the job, as long as it comes with live-in arrangements.

After much resistance, Noah accepts her terms and she moves in. Immediately she understand that his anger is not directed at her, but at himself and his condition. Not taking any crap from him, she gets closer inch by inch and pretty soon they are friends and a deeper connection develops.

An opportunity arises for Charlotte to play in an orchestra in Vienna, her dream city, and Noah has to let her go so that she can live her dream, while he can learn how to live with his new condition. There is certainly love between them, but will it be enough?

Thank you, Bree for recommending this one. It’s definitely an emotional ride and sometimes you can see that these two act according not only to their age but also their awful experiences. Both are dealing with grief, loss and it’s heartbreaking.

It’s a beautiful journey of self -discovery and healing. Some compare this to Me Before You but it definitely doesn’t have that horrid tone-deaf ending! I can’t tell if this is correct representation, but I can see what the author was trying to show here.

The story is told through the POV of both main characters, but mostly Charlotte’s.

Great book!

Narration: Caitlin Kelly does an amazing job, especially with the French accents and Aaron Shedlock is great as Noah.

Possible triggers: near fatal accident, blindness, death of a sibling
