“Geddy” up! If you love a good cowboy story, with a sassy heroine and a single dad who are arch nemeses, you are in for a (bull) ride!
Teddy and Gus have known each other literally forever, as Teddy’s dad came to work at the ranch when she was a baby. Apparently, they hated each other since then too. Alas, she’s his little sister’s bestie so they are around each other all the time. They couldn’t be more opposites: he’s a methodical planner who doesn’t like change and she’s a “fly by the sea of her pants” kind of girl. Oil and water. But when Teddy loses the job she loves and Gus is overwhelmed with the ranch and having his six-year-old saying with him, his sister convinces him to hire Teddy to babysit. Well, well, well… oil and water, but if you add a little something and shake well, they mix.
I fell in love with Teddy. She’s seeing everyone moving on with their lives and she’s feeling like she’s staying behind. It’s an uncomfortable feeling to be happy for the ones you love and at the same time feel like you are losing your place in their lives. Gus is the classic, reliable, stoic cowboy until he is hit by hurricane Teddy full force, especially when he sees the way she loves his kid fiercely. Things get complicated and that’s where the fun begins.
I also loved how this book is, in a way, an ode to fathers and daughters. Teddy’s relationship with her dad pulled at all my heartstrings in the same way Gus and Riley’s did.
Although I had an ARC for the book (Thanks, Penguin Random House International), I knew I had to get the audiobook and it was a treat! Narrated dual style by Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke, this was amazing! Samantha is an absolute delight as the sassy, passionate Teddy (and we all know she rocked too as Gus with that male voice she does to perfection). Jason embodies broody, stoic, grumpy like no other with that growl of his and he will turn you into mush from the first time she says “Teddy baby”.
I truly loved this one! This was my first Lyla Sage but I am already salivating for book 4!
Content notes: dealing with an ailing parent, secondary character is hospitalized with a life threatening condition
